If Americans flash their flags more than other countries, but aren't more patriotic, I can't think of a reason. They sure sound more patriotic to me.

It's a successful marketing campaign. People like to boast about name brand products they own or want. Look at the soft drink logos on everything. Automobile logos on things that have little or nothing to do with your daily commute. The Apple logo on ads. The same sort of mindset is behind this. Also, there seems to be a herd mentality afoot. The US is a land of immigrants with little common heritage other than the (compared to European countries) recent history. Rallying around the flag is a way to market commonality among a diverse population. In many cases, this manufactured nationalism and its symbol have been wildly successful.

I wave my flag just as much as the average American. Perhaps in some countries [or for some people] the flag does not hold as much symbolism as the flag does to citizens of the USA.

Well it seems to me that leaders of the country want people to feel like their very patriotic so they could sway the public into something, by saying it's the patriotic thing to do, and you are patriotic aren't you?

When I watch World Cup Soccer, or the Olympics, I see many flags from other countries. With soldiers in combat, and the country at war, more people do fly the flag. I find it oddly curious that its only a small fraction that do fly it, even on Memorial Day or July 4th. BTW- The US flag is the only flag or banner allowed by law to be flown by businesses in some yuppy communities who like visual conformity in their rubber stamp communities.

Sorry, but I spend half my year in the Netherlands, and you see their flag just as much there as you see the American flag here. Also, the Union Jack is no shrinking violet either.

I'll tell you why americans fly the flag all over the place, because you're indoctrinated into worshipping the flag from school upwards. I'm British and we just about have our flag on government buildings and that's pretty much it. We don't plaster it all over our footballers kit or stamp it on our trains or buses. Over here, people have got the freedom to fly whatever flag you want - being a democracy and all. If you're from jamaica, then you can fly the jamaican flag etc. Britain is too multicultural to force all races and creeds to stand under one flag. It just seems that if you don't fly the flag in american - you're not patriotic or you're some kind of anti american communist type terrorist. One other country in history plastered their flag everywhere: Nazi Germany

I flag the America flag because I am proud to be an American. Not out of any misplaced patriotism or because I have been "indoctrinated" to fly it, but because I love America, plain & simple. I don't just haul it out for Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Veterans Day -- I fly it every single day of the year. I fly it because I DO have a choice to do so. I'm not marketing anything, I don't favor football or sports in general, and I have a few words I would exchange with the current administration, but overall, I am still proud to be an American.
