I will return it as soon as I find out. If you try to keep it even for a short period, you could be sued. Worse, you could end up in jail. Return it and hope you get a reward.

Tell the person it's not yours to prevent any future trouble and guilt.

Return it. One, it wouldn't be right to keep something that's not yours. Two, you know full well it'll come back to bite you in the butt one day.

I will hold the cheque and find out if it was really a mistake, by contacting the sender of the check. It is quite possible that it was in settlement of some old receivable with interest which I had written off long back. Only after receiving a proper written reply that I will decide what to do with the check - cash it or return it.

Contact the maker of the check to tell them it was incorrect. Then ask if they wanted it returned or destroyed.

I'D DEPOSIT IT IN MY HIGH YIELD SAVINGS ACCOUNT TO GET THE INTEREST ON IT. WHEN THE MISTAKE WAS DISCOVERED, I'D GIVE IT BACK, BUT KEEP THE INTEREST.
