How can I "ftp" to a website? Do I need special software?

You can use your web browser. Just type ftp://[websitename] instead of the usual http://[websitename]. Some may not let you is ftp isnt turned at the website though

As Thundercleese has said, you can ftp using a web browser, but some folks like to use an ftp client program, as it does offer a nicer interface. A free one can be had from Mozilla (the same folks who make the Firefox web browser), it's called FileZilla. http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/
