To start, make sure both computers are in the same workgroup and that File and Printer sharing is enabled. Once you've confirmed each machine is part of the same workgroup and is online with and IP address, use the "ping" command to test connectivity. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx

Use your router to put them on the same network - it will most likely have a DHCP server built on, so turn this on. On both computers set the TCP/IP address to "automatic". This will put both computers onto the same subnet and they will then be able to share with ease.
