Well there are two types of shame. Guilt and remorse type can be constructive and offers us a conscience; while sorrow is destructive and can make people more evil. There are a lot of people who do do not have much of a conscience but one person we can control is our self and we can set an example to others with what we beleive in. I would say most people do have a sense of guilt and remorse. It also depends on how they define right and wrong and for different people that will be different.

It is still around in people who love other people and who use it to help keep them from harming others.

I'm not all that sure that people are much different today than yesterday, fifty or one hundred years ago or a hundred years into the future - the times may be a changing but people are still pretty much what they are. There are some that prize honesty, and morals - there are some that do feel shame and know when they do and have done wrong; and there are some that don't. I really don't have the stats on this but just a little study of history shows that questions of this ilk have been debated for eons and least some of every generation believed they lived in the worse of times. +5
