With a shortage of capital for new construction, many building contractors are responding to the current financial crisis by looking for (and sometimes soliciting unnecessary) repair work. What is your experience of this?

It's sad that it has come to this .. Although I don't agree with their methods, we all have to survive.

Though the construction industry has had a downturn worldwide,they have come up with innovative ideas for keeping themselves afloat. Some of the major builders have come up with offers of house swap,lower interest rates on loans,rate cuts,no down payment till delivery,no emi's till delivery,larger area for the same price, freehold land for those who book larger flats and so on!One of the majors has come up with building flats for the lower income group who work with government or nationalised banks!
