  • There are many prejudices against certain types of races. In Japan, many feel as if they are the only superior oriental race and the Chinese and Koreans are beneath them. China and Korea feel the same. Racism is part of human nature and it is damn hard to stop. I suggest you put his behind you and confront the next person who rolls his/her eyes at you when you tell them of your descent and politely ask for answers.
  • I'm not even Italian and I had always understood this to be true. There's also a prejudice of N. Italians again the more S. Italians, isn't there? Or is that wrong?
  • My Bf experienced the samething while in Northern Italy. His family is from Sicily, but his Aunt married someone who is from Northern Italian. Its funny how people in other countries are alittle more proud of their heritage than you think. Maybe in America, we've always been in a lesser state of being proud of our heritages because of the melting pot theory?
  • The Sicilians are looked at by Northern Italians as being "half breeds" the Moors conquered Sicily and occupied it for a while. and due to this there was lots of interbreeding of the Moors and the native Sicilians.as a result, Sicilians have darker skin and dark hair (the Moors were black)
  • Part of my family is Sicilian & the old folks spoke of it. One of the things they liked about Texas was no one cared that they were Sicilian.
  • yes, In some Italians eyes Sicilians are the Ni***rs of Italy I'm not saying it right or true, but it is how it is
  • I'm of Italian heritage ... from what I heard growing up, there's always been a sort of "feud" between Sicilians and Italians from the North. I always think Italians are Italians!! I love them all!
  • This tends to happen in most countries, where the South look down on the North or vice versa, and people in big cities view those in the country as backwards bumpkins who still point with puzzled expressions at planes, so it is pretty universal.
  • I have Sicilian blood. I spent time there in the service and the Nothern Italians had an air of Superiority. Like Austalia being a former penal colony of Brittain so Sicily was that of Italy. We have our own dialect and those in Tuscany speak dictionary Italy. Some refused to acknowledge me when I spoke, but I'm a fast learner. You can't tell where I'm from now. So bacci mio cuolo
  • I have never understood what the thing is against people with Sicilian heritage is. I have heard it but am clueless. But then I am not Italian. I think that anyone who judges another on the basis of heritage/ethnicity is, frankly, from silly to psychopathic. Considering what is going on in Italy right now regarding my people, I say that with authority.
  • Well, Sicily was once a penal colony. It's the most racially mixed segment of Italy, and it's the home of the Mafia and the Cosa Nostra. I've heard Italian expatriates in several countries growl, and seen them spit when they said "Siciliano." But I've know a few Sicilians, and they were all kinds of nice people.
  • My understanding is that it has to do with the Moorish ancestry of many Sicilians and the Mafia which began in with the Sicilians not so much as a crime thing as a protection thing.
