Ha Ha, ok i will say jack because he comes first to my mind.

haha. jack. i bet the supervisor has a hands on management style, which rubs jack the wrong way. hed rather do it himself than hand it off to jack. sounds like jill has been lying down on the job alot, and now that her jobs in jeopardy shes wide open to embracing new opportunities and getting a leg up on her career.

Whichever has the higher salary.
-
I would say, whichever one doesnt have a family to support. If they both have families, the one with the higher pay.

There is one possibility that hasnt been addressed. Is Jill eye candy material, is "friend" gay and likes Jack. In addition to their exceptional performance who will take the business to the next level. We neither know "friend" or the area of business so its a hard question to answer. I am truly stuck its 50/50 - I will go for Jill

Which one gets in early and leaves late? Which one never calls in sick unless he/she is sick? Which one doesn't waste time on personal stuff? Which one is the better team player? Which one is the better leader? Who always meets deadlines? Who makes the fewest errors? Which one requires more guidance and hand-holding? Which one avoids office gossip/politics/controversy? Which one has never said "that's not my job"? Which one has never said "that's how we always do it"? Somewhere among the above there must be some kind of differentiation..they cannot possibly be identically gifted at everything!

HAHAHAHA!! Alright, casually ask them about getting promoted and taking on extra responsibility for minimal pay increases. If one of them is a real go-getter... FIRE THEM! Your friend could be next on the block, don't let a replacement that might do the work for less money stick around.

I went through this recently. I had to lay some people off due to a downturn in business. When deciding who to keep and who to let go, some of the things I looked at was which person would be more adaptable and be able to take on additional duties, who got along better with coworkers, who was more responsible, who was late/absent less, among other things.
