  • The original meaning was a somebody who made bets, the customer of a bookmaker. Recently it has widened to a more generalised meaning of a customer, but with a definitely negative connotation: a loser, someone who one is taking advantage of. Perhaps half way between "customer" and "sucker". Particularly used of the customers of prostitutes - perhaps to allow the girls to build up their self esteem in what is otherwise a pretty humiliating trade.
