We actually analysed films including Platoon against history, military and academic works at uni to see how realistic the portrayal was. Platoon surprisingly didn't do as badly as some others... some events did occur in a very similar fashion, some didn't occur at all. It shouldn't be taken as a pure representation of the events of the war though since, despite its writer, it is still pretty much a work of fiction. There was a definite aim in writing it.
