A housewarming need not be an expensive affair. In my culture, very close family and to-be neighbours are invited and we go about "boiling of milk and spilling the same". Since you mention finances are tight, a simple get together with simple items on the menu should be fine. since you mention you are moving to a new place getting friendly with neighbours will surely be of help to you if not now in near future. So a few monies spent should be worth the spend

House warming parties are for people moving into a new home - doesn't matter wether they are buying or renting, whether it is their first home or they have moved many times - it's like a settling in party; so go for it! Good luck!
