I tend to have decent luck with craigslist, but then again, I live in a town where people are constantly upgrading and chucking out old hardware. You may wind up with something a little old/slow, but if you're lucky you can get one FREE that way. Unfortunately, it is rare to find a decent (relatively current/fast) machine for under $100, though it's not hard finding one under $200 if you are willing to do a little legwork. Worst-case scenario is that you wind up with a (brand new) netbook for under $350. If you pay more than that then you spent too much. Getting a portable system that can get the job done does NOT require selling a kidney.

There may be some kind of scholarship out there or somekind of financial aid to get a lap top. http://www.scholarships.com/ look at these ones too - you can get a scholarship for the weirdest things! *LOL* http://www.collegeandfinance.com/32-weird-scholarships-almost-anyone-can-get/

Some Universities/Colleges offer discounts for Sony, HP, or Dell laptops. My university does this and it is how I bought my sony laptop for a lot cheaper. I can't guarantee you will get an awesome laptop for free. There are usually hidden fees or things you have to do before getting it, or it will be a complete scam. You should call the school up and see if they offer student discounts for laptops. If you are also working, consider saving the money up this summer for it, or if you can, get a credit card. It will help a lot towards buying it since you only have to pay it back every month. Good luck!
