Today I read an obituary that said in lieu of flowers, any memorial contribution should be sent directly to the family. I never remember seeing anything like that before. They usually say to give it to a charity. Is this a new thing?

That is something I have never heard of before! I have frequently known requests for donations to charity, never to the family.. that is something which I would expect guests and friends of the deceased to orgaise amongst themselves as a gesture if they felt it appropriate. Unless, the family want to pass that money on to a charity? Which may be the case. For my uncle's funeral we had a second donation - the first to charity, and the second additional request was to fund a bench to put in his favourite place where his ashes were to be scattered. That request for donations was made only to close family though.

What is happening to manners? Tsk. I saw this question on the heels of another one that mentioned a couple who asked for donations to their honeymoon trip fund, AT their wedding reception. Classy. This falls into the same category, methinks.

This is becoming more common. It is a plea for money to help pay the funeral expenses. Obviously, the family lacks the necessary funds.
