I recently found tons of ant hills/regular black ants living in my backyard and i'm unsure if that is a good thing or not---are ants good for the plants or should i find a way to remove them? i am open to suggestions.

the only good kind of ants are harvester ants, they dont do anything bad, they are also growing endangered because of the fire ants, if you could tell me their behavior, then i could tell if they re harvester ants, are they aggressive, have you been bitten by any of them, have you found any inside?

if you have found any inside your house, those are sugar ants, and they can be a real pest, get rid of them as soon as possible before they make colonies of ants in your walls and every unreachable place, but if they dont do anything, try not to bother them...

Ants are nature’s maids so to speak. Here is a helpful site http://www.stoller-eser.com/ants.htm . Now if you want to get rid of them in a non toxic way try pouring boiling water over the ant hills, you will have to do this for a few days or they will just rebuild. Once they realize this is not a safe place to build a mound they usually move on. It’s not poisonous to pets or children that play in the yard; but unfortunately it kills a lot of them and all of their larvae. I would only recommend killing them off this way if they are actually being a nuisance such at biting.

I tend to have a live and let live attitude regarding all of nature, even bugs. There are a lot of them for a very good reason! They are a vital link in the food chain. If they aren't bothering anything or setting up housekeeping in your home, leave them be. If they do become a nuisance, come find me.
