  • ok first things first we will check the cheapest to replace and easiest to test....to check if your are getting a spark take out one of the spark plugs. then attach it to the distributer like you normally would....i..e...the wire.....then ground the tip of it on a metalic piece of your engine block...then have someone crank it...you should see a spark...if you dont see a spark(asuming you have tested all other posibilities)its a bad plug, distributer, or master coil....if you are getting a spark its 70% of the time your timing....you can slightly advance this by turning the distributer to the right or left...though, if it is too far out of timing you will probably need a timing light(if you have never use such a device, i would say to have you take it in to get tested) timing chains are a bear to work with if you are the back yard mechanic. and can give you considerable problems(not only are they no fun to change).thats about as much as i could help you in general terms...if you have more dificulty leave another post and i will do my best to help you out.
  • my 87 bronco suddenly quit firing after i stalled it last month, checked for spark by taking out plug and testing on block,no spark so i changed the coil, still none so i took it in to garage, turned out to be the brain box,$97.00 canadian for the part.hope this helps
  • A broken timing belt/chain will allow the engine to crank notably faster than normal. Assuming you are not deaf, you can easily hear the different cranking speed. It sounds QUITE different that the normal starting sound. If you normally don't pay enough attention to know what the normal sound is, then you shouldn't be under the hood.
