Firstly, you get a bag that is decorated to your liking, unlike bags that are mass produced. And it is uniquely yours, because only you have created the shapes and chosen the colours. The effect of applique to a bag would be to lift it from the average to the special eg if you were making a bag for a new mother to carry her baby needs in, you could decorate it to suit that use. The bag would become a sentimental item to the mother, as it would forever remind her of her baby's birth AND the care you took to make the bag especially for her.
