  • Yes i was brought up to do that, and i have offered and been turned down and had the daggers drawn look thrown my way too:( +
  • Yes and they said they wanted to stand as they set all day.
  • Yes. Some older people are very proud and don't want any special treatment. My dad always hated it because he never saw himself as an age and didn't like to be reminded that others did. Regardless, I think that offering is always the right thing to do.
  • I always gave up my seat for the older people. I was raised that way.
  • Yes. Some people resent being treated like they're disabled. I've learned NOT to offer my seat to someone JUST because they're elderly. But I'll usually offer my seat to someone on crutches, with a baby, or carrying lots of bundles, regardless of their age.
  • I always get a little scared when I offer my seat incase that happens and I will be embarassed. Once a woman snapped at me and refused. Mostly people seem to really appreciate it. Pregnant women the most.
  • No, they've always gladly taken it : )
  • I offered my seat to an elderly gentleman on a crowded train. He refused, but I think he was old-fashioned in his way. Maybe he was thinking if anyone should've offered him their seat it should've been another young man and not a woman! I'm only embarrassed about this type of situation is when I had offered my seat to someone (elderly or whatever) and they refuse, but people getting on the bus/train much later whom hadn't witness this and think ill mannered of me to not offer my seat in the first instance.
  • I was raised that way. Since I'm older, elderly has a much more narrow definition but I always offer the seat to my elders and to woman. I have never been embarrassed or had anyone rudely refuse the seat. Sometimes they say "no" but politely. I did it on a bus in Italy once because the woman was wearing a sleeveless dress and didn't shave her underarms. I was grossed out and grateful when she took the seat. That was 40 years ago, now they shave and use deodorant too! Deodorant is the single most important invention of the 20th century.
  • No but I did get in an argument with two kids who took the last seats and a pregnant woman had to just stand. Dont you hate Punks.
  • I have, but as a rather large person (6'6" 350#) I never recieved any dirty looks after the refusal. I did get a joke about me standing making him look small.
  • It happens.
