I have a 96 corolla too and just changed my third brake light. You have to push in the pins on each side of the brake light holder inside the car. Just go to the back seat and you'll find a pin on each side of the holder for the 3rd brake light. Push the center in and then pull out the pin. The back case should come out. You can then twist out the light bulb holder and then pull out the bulb.

You have to change the bulb from inside the trunk. You should see the wires leading up to it.

Just turn the bulb holder and it will release so you can change the bulb. Then position it back in and turn so it locks back in place.
