Is New York the only state with an "upstate"? Personally, would not call Toledo or Cleveland "upstate Ohio".

I think people in Vermont use it, too. Maine and NH definitely don't. Michigan has the U.P.

probably. sometimes i think pennsylvania sucks and i hate it. then i look north to ny and all their wierd people and ways and say thank god i dont live in ny

We don't call it upstate in IL ... mostly just Northern, Central or Southern IL to identify location.

I think a lot of states use the term loosely sometimes, but New York is probably the only one where it's something of an identity.

Upstate Arizona? Nope. We do have Uptown Phoenix which sounds really hic.
