The wearing of black is part of the psycoDrama that helps separate the witch from the mundane world. It signifies the absence of light, and the endless mystery of the night. Witches were associated with black way before Satan was ever invented, and red is usually associated with the Satan creature.

Why do Witches wear black? Witches are often associated with the color black. Some would argue that both are evil, and represent the powers of darkness. Witches know that this is not the case. We aren't evil and neither is the color black. Black is a powerful color in religious symbolism, worn by spiritual representatives of many faiths, such as priests, nuns, and Hasidic rabbis. Few people would accuse their local nunnery of Satanic worship even though so many of them are found in flowing black robes (Sally Field, in The Flying Nun, being one of the exceptions). Whether they know it or not, religious leaders wear black because the practice carries with it an ancient psychic truth that has always been a part of Witchcraft. The color black is like a solar battery, drawing in energy and light which allows Witches to tap into the universal wisdom.

Don't parallel the common stereotype of a 'witch' created by another belief system with actual witches. I know a lot of witches. They were everyday clothes just like the rest of us.

The witches I had for neighbors once didn't wear black any more than the next person would. But there is a symbology involved wherein black represents the absence of light, which denotes the difference between good and evil. Which applies, of course, to witches who consider their practice to be in line with the forces of evil, which not all do.

The last witch I met was naked. Color was the least of our problems, mine was red as I declined to join the ceremony. Nothing against the ritual, just didn't want subject others to me naked.
