It pretty much already is. If they get rid of the union they may be able to turn a profit.
-
It is privatized now.

It is and has been privatized for a number of years. It's time Congress acts to make it a 5 day delivery service like many businesses.

If the Post Office gives the mail up to private Companies I think the people will suffer the most. The private companies will contract the work out to the lowest bidder. Then you will have minimum wage people hired to run the mail service. We will have unqualified people and less trustworthy people running the mail.. The Post Office at least have guidelines and strict mail policies. I hope the Post Office stay like it is even if it has to raise the prices a little.

You mean like banks, other financial institutions and such glistening examples of industry as Enron or AIG? I don't think so. :(
-
I don't think that they ever have been profitable.

No, it is time for the government to start getting some good income that doesn't come from taxes to pay for all their shortcomings. Legalize marijuana, sell it from government regulated locations. All profit to the government. Bye bye deficit, hello multi-trillion dollar government cash surplus!

umm, the postal service is a private company, contracted to do work for the US citizenry by the government. another business could "conceivably" compete for the work, but it would be outrageously expensive to start up the work force, equipment, transport, facilities, etc. a better option is for the postal service to cut it's workforce, stop weekend delivery and be able to buy gasoline at reduced rates. no more Saturday bills!! yay!
