How do you know if the thermostat is bad?

Home, auto, or other? Home: It doesn't work! When you try to turn the furnace on (temp up to force it), it won't. When you try to turn the AC on (temp DOWN to force it), it doesn't. As a bonus, if you try to turn the fan on without either, if it doesn't. Home thermostats go from relatively cheap (under $15 for cheapies) to hundreds of dollars for programmable ones.) Auto: In the winter, your heater doesn't work (thermostats are cheaper than heating coil, radiator, etc. - Try this first!) In the summer, your A/C may not work. For A/C, have them test your coolant gas, first.) Other: ??? I don't know. How do you know? ;-)
