Pimples are basically pus that well up under the skin over time, the result being that the pressure on your pain receptors is too much for them. That's why it hurts.

It's an infection and the building dirt, pus, and white blood cells to fight it add uncomfortable pressure on the surrounding skin. If you insist on popping it, be sure to put medication on it to prevent further infection.

Acne or any single pimple occurrence, is a localized infection that is straining the surrounding tissue with both it's own cellular growth and the accumulation of dead white blood cells (an accumulation known as puss). Think of it this way... the stretching and pushing/pulling the pimple is causing is effecting the nerve endings in the surrounding tissue to the point that they send signals of discomfort to the brain. This is not a natural situation for them (though most of us have at least a minor case of acne as adolescents). It is merely that the nerve endings around this tiny area of infection are under duress.
