because theres millions of idiots that will pay the price.. including myself from time to time. lately ive actually been making mocha frappuccinos in my apartment, but when i do go out for coffee, its usually a smaller coffee shop or dunkin donuts... but starbucks has a cool vibe, i won't lie about that. thanks for the question. +5

Because people think it is a BIG status symbol. And I also think people like all the swooshing & fiddling stuff they do - makes it look sooo exotic. Myself? I think it is a waste of money and the coffee tastes YUCK! Give me home brewed anytime.

It has become a status symbol.....and lots of people want to be part of that. Reminds me of the "Emperor's New Clothes" story. If you don't agree it is great, you may be considered as ignorant and unsophisticated....until enough people will stand up and say "this is a rip-off....it sucks!"....and less people may be willing to be part of the "rip-off" scenario....

It is so damn expensive the only thing I can think of is maybe Jaun Valdez rides his mule all the way Columbia and deliveries the coffee beans personally. Nothing else could explain the high prices at starbucks.
