  • I was 20 when I had mine out. It was rough; I had to go back to OR because I hemorrhaged. They still put me in the kid's ward. The little darlings were running around and asking for spaghetti while I was still barfing from anethesia. I think it's easier when you're younger.

However, it did allow me to have a time period where antibiotics were not a major food group for me.

    Best of luck to you.

I had my tonsils out at the age of 32 because they had become necrotic.

Before I had them removed I was getting tonsilitis approximately once a month and was becoming immune to antibiotics.

It was extremely painful to be honest. It is a myth about them giving you ice cream. They gave me toast and rough foods and encouraged me to eat rough foods.

Once I had recovered, I felt a lot better overall. I haven't had a sore throat since (5 years), and I now rarely get colds either.

I was 14 when I had mine out, it just felt like an extremely sore throat, but it was a great excuse to eat ice cream without guilt!

I had mine done when I was three, but they usually don't do that nowadays. my younger daughter had hers out at 6, because of chronic infection. These days they do it very easily, but they keep you in long enough to ascertain that no stitches rupture (a rare occurrence, but does happen). My daughter was very very sore, and it was hard for a little one, but I think adults can take it better.
Don't panic. Usually it is a last resort for adults, and other treatments (eg antibiotics) are tried first.

I had my tonsils out when I was like 8 or so, and other than a very slight sore throat for a day afterwards, there was nothing to it. As someone else already said, it's a great excuse for eating all the ice cream you can handle! :P

The thing is, if your doctor thinks you need them removed, get it done as soon as possible, because you don't want to wait until your tonsils are super-inflamed. It's a simple procedure, and not worth the pain you feel if you don't get it done. The sore throat you feel afterwards is no worse than when you get a cold that makes your throat sore.
