Of course it can! All your government has to do is take the money out of the military. Instead of spending money on killing people, spend money on helping the sick.

No. I don't think the government is capable of running health care at all. The money, I don't believe is the problem.

Monetarily yes. However the political situation that brought Canadian medicare was post WWII Canadian socialism. It started in Saskatchewan by Tommy Douglas and was adopted at the national level, the time and place was right. The US would probably need a very liberal congress, senate and presidency for a universal system to get into the system. This may happen if the dems win the presidency although the senate is almost evenly split and it may be hard to pass a universal health care bill without some sort of manipulation. Basically the US would have to come in and say o.k doctors this is how much your going to get paid for these procedures. The government would nationalise the HMO's or negotiate with them on behalf of patients ( they nationalised in canada). They would have to issue medical cards and budget all the money necessary to serve everyone.

We could afford it, but never will. There is just too much big money in it, and I think the medical profession would never sit still for it. But, I do believe it is the only way America will ever be able to get medical costs under control, tho'.

The US government and well afford it. The government just needs change it's priorities ,and put the taxpayers dollars to good use.In reality the expenditure is not nearly what the media estimates. They make it sound that taxes would go up through the roof. The opposite is true, for other countries have socialized and don't feel an excessive tax burden. The medical system is flawed because cost of medical service does not equal the service provided.
