That is a very interesting question Leah! =) I like it a lot!...
Whether women really were regarded as possessions in OT time is hard to say. Some parts of Jewish OT law certainly do assign women a status similar to possessions but in reality the situation will probably have varied between families.
.
It was pretty much universal at this time that women were considered as inferior to men and of a lower status in most areas of life though. It was a very male dominated and orientated society in those days.
.
In some ways it was this perception of being unimportant that allowed the women to stay and watch the crucifixion. Because they were 'only' women the Jewish and Roman authorities regarded them as no threat. Had the male disciples of Jesus been at the scene of the crucifixion they would not have been treated in this way.
In Judaism women were NEVER viewed as property, just look at the Provers 31 Woman, or Ruth or Ester. Debera was the Judge over all Israel. The woman was to be esteemed as a Ruby in the O.T. Without Ester the Jews would have been slaughtered. This is why the "Bride" of Christ,US, is held in such esteem!
