When did "manic depression" become "bipolar disorder" and why?

    The name 'bipolar disorder' has been adopted because it more completely describes the condition, which is one of not just manic depressive lows but also manic highs, where the individual feels all-powerful and on top of the world. People with bipolar disorder spend their lives swinging between these two poles.
