Believe it or not, I've seen this happen.. The custoemr said "I was looking for ____". The clerk called someone and that product showed up in a variety of sizes to choose from.

It's just a formality. Trying to make the customer feel important. It's like asking someone "How are you today?" You don't really want to know, but you ask to be polite.
-
Well, its like this you see. Occassionaly some moron will say "Oh yes"and storm off down the isle to fetch what they had forgotten, leaving everyone fuming....apart from the checkout girl.....who was dying for a break.

It's a matter of courtesy. They do it to seem personable and many times they are required to say certain things like that by their company's management. Ever been to Chik-Fil-A and had the person waiting on you say, "My pleasure" when you say "thank you"? Same thing there.
-
I hate when they ask you that!
-
Just good customer relations in case something is tough to find or there is an item the store should start carrying because lots of their customers are looking for it but it's not there.
-
During training to be a check out clerk they reinforce the rule that you have to ask about that and remain polite. Even if you are just a stocker where I work, you have to help out whoever asks for it. When you are a cashier, the managers are always watching and waiting for you to forget that you have to say your "lines" to each and every customer. After a while, it just becomes routine...

Friendly banter, Its their job so you come back again.
-
What bothers me about the question is HOW they ask it ... like they've been programmed to say it. I'd rather they not ask it, than ask it like that.
-
I love to answer rhetorical questions like that. I have said, "Well, since you asked, I was looking for this product in a larger/economy size and you no longer stock it. Do you know anything about that?"
-
I guess it's part of the routine they are trained to perform their job by. I answer honestly anyway. Not that they would know how to help...
-
just good customer service

I think they are told to ask that, one of the things they are told to say as part of their job. I DO always or almost always get asked that. And I CAN be prone to forget something, but I normally don't realize that until AFTER I leave the store & get home! But if the cashier reminded me I forgot something, I would go back in get it while I'm in the store, but NOT keep any others waiting behind me.
