Strive to create a society were gangs are no longer necessary.

Keep young people busy with lots of sports and other leisure activities. The governments need to investigate money to cure the restlessness of the current generation of gangs.

The social anomaly of criminal gangs usually stems from feelings of social unrest, a lack of respect for currently imposed social institutions, and the youth being malcontent. As petrusromanus implied in his answer, if today's youth was socially healthy and content, gangs would not occur. I myself believe that keeping kids busy and too distracted to form gangs is only a band-aid solution. The real issue that needs to be addressed here runs much deeper, into the competitive, consumerist attitude that permeates modern society. In a society where the main focus is working to earn money, and spending money to consume product, people will always find it shallow and hollow on some level. And thus, social unrest arises, gangs are formed, crimes are perpetrated, and the cycle of fear and consumerism continues.

Very little can be done about the gangs, but we may be able to reach individuals before they join and help them achieve something better in life.

Truely, I think George Carlin said it best when he stated that we should kick everyone out of Colorado, put up a 100ft fence completely around the state, put all the drug addicts, gang bangers, rapists, murders etc. and let them kill each other off and let the rest of society continue on.

Let's do what they did in Chicago. Get the cops, FBI, etc. and arrest them all. Wipe them out. If they shoot, kill them. Let them be immortalized in songs and movies like the Chicago gangs, but wipe them out.

They should be ignored and not even recognized or acknowledged by society. Individuals who commit crimes should be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. By society, the media, etc..etc. making the point to inform us that a criminal is part of a particular gang, actually helps to propel the gangs status. It gives them power and pride. So I say completely and totally ignore there existence. In court, it matters not if they are in a gang. If they stole something or killed someone or whatever, the punishment for the crime will be the same whether they are with the bloods, crips or the mickey mouse club.

Since they all like guns so much, put them in "Boot Camp" and deploy them to Iraq!
