I wish you would consider quitting both.

I know people with addictions who don't even smoke that many cigs. You really have no reason to smoke if you aren't addicted, and certainly not that much. However I am surprised. How can you smoke 10 cigarettes a day and not be addicted? I suspect you are actually addicted to them by the way you phrased the question: "...I can go for long period of time without craving a cigarette" So you do crave, then? :) I guess you're smoking out of force of habit, which is not unusual. Try spending a day without the cigarettes and see how you feel. As for the weed, that's your choice, no judgement, but be careful you don't get reliant on it. Personally speaking I'm not a fan of drugs or drug takers. I have friends who died through drugs so have a very low opinion of them in general, however I admit that weed is 'safe' in moderation.

How odd. I have been able to control all of the addictions in my life, except cigarettes.

You smoke a half pack of cigarettes a day, but you don't consider yourself addicted? Then stop. Problem solved.

I think its a little more complicated. Take sex for example, You (can) want it, You (can) have a lot of it, you (can) go long periods without it. And yet, you don't see many people calling it an addiction. Only when you start seeing things falling off or lungs failing do you start calling them addictions. That's what i think anyway.

I'd say you were addicted to tobacco. I usually never smoked more than 8 cigs in a day but used to consider myself addicted. Going without for a few hours or even a couple of days is nothing. If a long period = say 2 weeks then no you probably aren't addicted and therefore are spending money on tobacco when you don't need to. With both, it's really up to you what you want to put in your body and only the opinion of the people you care about and yourself should matter really. If you're happy with it then fair enough. As for addictions in general, I think it's best to try to get rid of them. You shouldn't need to have any kind of drugs to enable you to get through the day. Not just cigs and weed but also with addictions to things like booze, caffeine and sugar. I know since cutting all that stuff out myself, I feel amazing; my outlook is more positive, I'm full of energy and wide awake until bed time lol. At the end of the day it's about what makes you happy. If you're happy doing what you do then cool. If not, if it's causing you problems then you should consider making a change.

To my knowledge, when addictions are being graded (eg paracetemol is not very addictive, heroin is very addictive) there is no grade that says, "Once any human being has had this drug X times, they will definitely be physically and psychologically addicted, no matter what." So my opinion on that is that you are a very strange case, especially if you have been doing this for many years. My advice to you is that you stop doing it before you DO get addicted and it gets worse. Even if you are not *addicted* to cigarettes, they are absolute poison to your body. The reason so many continue to smoke is because they want to quit, but cannot, because they are addicted. If you don't have an addiction standing in your way, then what's stopping you? Also: do you think the fact that you can smoke either weed, or cigarettes, means you may have a psychological addiction to smoking, itself, but not to the substances?

You may consider yourself to not be addicted to cigarettes but what about the nicotine that is in the cigarettes? My guess is that you probably mix the weed with tobacco which has nicotine in it anyway so that point is out of the window. I dare you to give up weed and see if you don't crave nicotine then. In addition, addiction to nicotine works on various levels: The initial craving is down to withdrawal symptoms. Fine, maybe you don't suffer from nicotine withdrawal when you go without it (I consider a break to be several days rather than several hours) but this still doesn't mean you are not addicted. What about habitual addiction i.e. by association? If you can be in a similar situation where you would usually spark up and not spark up then I would say fine, you are not addicted habitually. However, there is a third level which is the most difficult to break and that is when you spark up as a crutch or coping strategy. If you can go without nicotine when you are stressed or bored or lonely, then I would say fine you are not addicted at this level either. I have quit smoking, however, I acknowledge that I have still potentially have an addiction because whenever big traumatic, stressful life events occur in my life I feel the need to smoke. I have to work hard to not do it, but only if you can go for the rest of your life without needing/wanting nicotine can you truly say you are not addicted to it. The statement you in your question refers to the kind of usage level I was at when I was about 17 years old. Within a couple of years I was a full time (secret) smoker and it has taken me 10 years of trying to quit to get to the stage I am at now. It makes you think doesn't it?

Nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs known....You are addicted. I quit smoking twice in my life...this time for 20 years...and I know that 1 drag off a cigarette could start me again....and no way do I want to feel like that again.:) If you are not addicted...then why are you spending so much money on cigarettes?

That might be true right now but the thing is that it won't be true in the future. That isn't even unusual. Many smokers were at the point you are now. Smokers who are now thoroughly addicted. My brother, for instance. He fooled himself into thinking he was somehow immune to becoming addicted. Well, he wasn't. I would try to quit now before it becomes really difficult to (if not impossible). If you do it now it will be easy. I quit and it took a good two months for me to not have serious cravings. It was Hell.

A half pack is what 10 cigarettes? That sounds like addication to me, even if its 5 thats still a lot. And I would say the reason you dont crave more is because of the weed. If you can give them up do, I dont know where you live but in Ireland smoking a half pack every day would cost you €1519.70 a year, you could get something really nice with that money :D

I'm in a similar situation to you, occasional smoker of cigs but regular of green, been like that for last 15yrs or so. I'd say if you're happy as you are then cool, it's only an issue if you wanna change but cant. Personally I'm considering giving it a kick but that’s cos I think it's interfering with my life after all this time, not looking forward to a non-blurry existence but sure I'll get used to it.

Unfortunately, I had the great displeasure of watching my mom die from lung cancer. If you had ever watched someone die that way, you would never ever touch a cigarette, again. It is truly hard for me to imagine a longer or more painful way to die. If you don't like yourself and you want to suffer greatly for a very long period of time, go ahead and smoke, again.

I think you r addicted slightly but not to a very large extent. I believe that certain people have addictive personalities and find it hard to control how much they experience certain substances. This is why some people are able to take drugs and stop when they want to and some people have to keep on taking and cannot stop.
