There is no debtor's prison in the USA. You will not go to jail for simply not paying a credit card. Creditors have different limits, but generally there is some dollar amount that, if you owe less than such an amount, they will just cycle you through the collection circuit. You'll get threatening letters and phone calls from various debt collectors as your account gets re-re-re-re-re-re-resold the longer you blow off paying any of them. State laws vary, but if you owe less than their "legal action" threshold and you wait long enough (many states have a 4 year statute of limitations on collection of unsecured debt), then your only downside (not counting your moral beliefs) is a credit score hit and annoying phone calls and letters to shred.
