    Asker's Pick

Selected by the asker, Marky Mark. (What's this?)

If it's a locksmith with reasonable skills that you can trust then yes.

However, simple tasks like re-keying your locks can be done yourself for very little money. It cost me $1.80 to re-key all six locks on my house while a locksmith would've charged about $150 to do the same. It's best to learn a little bit about locks so that you understand how secure your house really is. When I rekeyed my locks, I found master pins that meant up to 32 possible keys could've opened the locks, found that half the locks where missing pins and springs in one pin chamber and found that the anti-pick security pins that came with those locks from the manufacturer were all missing except of one in the front door. A trustworthy locksmith would not short you on pins and the security features of the locks you've purchased and would advise you on how builder's tend to master key the properties they sell but an untrustworthy one will be trying to sell you on titanium cored bolts and suggest that drilling a lock is the only option on a lockout instead of picking, bumping or impressioning the lock when called on a lock out call.

    I am a1-locksmith in Burlingame Ca 94010
    http://www.a1-locksmith.com
and have allot of overhead. Remember we only net around 10% of what we charge. Most of my customers are happy to see me. Some even tip over the cost of the invoice. If you want to save money you can bring the locks in to the locksmith shop to be re keyed. Or just back your self up with spare keys or push button electronic locks in case your locked out. Or make appointments during regular working hours and avoid nights and weekend calls. Save even more buying high security products online at

No. Taking advantage of vulnerability is never justified.

The smith has taken the time to acquire a body of knowledge about their profession as well as the tools to perform their profession like transportation and fuel. Not to mention other expenses like liability insurance, taxes, a shop etc. Their time is valuable.

So, is the service too expensive?

    What do you do?
