For me it was purely recreational at first. Then it became one of my many forms of self-medication above all else.

I believe they generally start for recreational purposes except in cases where it is prescribed for medical conditions. The danger is it's like alcohol, a mood and mind altering drug. As such, self medication is a real possibility.
