  • You're right. Gay marriage is a scapegoat. People demonize it because they don't have any solutions to these truly big problems you mention, like crime and the economy, so it is easier to point the finger at gay marriage. I'd also venture to add that many of the gay marriage opponents are responsible for economic problems (*cough "Bush" cough cough*).
  • I think that neither the government, nor any church, should interfere with peoples lives when it comes to marriage. Marriage is a unity of people who love each other. It doesn't matter if it's a man and a woman, a woman and a woman, or a man and a man. The impact of people in love, celebrating life together is a positive one, unlike the impact of those others who would rather have them live their lives differently.
