He is likely just marking his new territory. There might have been a pet in the house previously and he is smelling the remnants of their calling cards- so he has decided to cover it with his own. It will probably settle down in a while.
He might not have done it in your first home because of his age or the fact that there were no competitive scents.
he probally needs to get used to his new surrounding and i do believe cats like to mark their territory.
