G'day Alanpro777, Thank you for your question. GMail was launched in 2004 as a Beta by invitation. If you expressed interest on their website, you eventually got an invitation to join. It is now out of beta and publicly available which is good. After all, its competitors in Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail are. For mine, it is the best web-based e-mail system so I would recommend that you join. I have attached sources for your reference. I think it is an improvement to allow anyone to register an account without an invite.

I think it was a good marketing move by google to make it look seem like you had to belong to a special 'group' in order to use gmail. Many people started using it just for that reason, but the number of invitations they gave you was ridiculous so you could invite as many people as you wanted, it spread like a wild fire. I thought I'd never say this but Microsoft can learn a lesson or 2 from google not just in their technology but in their Marketing techniques.
