  • No... you are talking about traveling by foot and horse over undeveloped terrain. No roads, barely any trails, and not many reliable maps of any sort. You had all your belongings and traveling supplies with you. You might average a few miles a day if you are lucky.
  • When you're going at three miles per hour and can't travel in the darkness and need to hunt for your food, it takes a very long time to travel 2500 miles.
  • I confess I don't know much about American history, but it seems to me that they would probably be travelling on foot or by horse and wagon. They might be moving their entire family and a lot of their belongings across country with no roads during daylight hours. Weather would be another contributing factor. I daresay under these conditions they would be doing well to cover 20km a day!

  • A week or two would have left them in what was, by the standards of the time, effectively desert. They wanted to get across it to the "good lands" the other side. And at perhaps 15 miles a day, that takes a long time.
