Light spotting is normal during menarche. She may have light spotting for several months to a year. She may have no more spotting. She may have spotting occasionally and occasionally a period. She may have spotting, no period, spotting, periods, no periods, spotting...whatever. All are normal during menarche. +5

It could be perfectly normal still when a girl matures to this point it is important that she visit a physician or nurse who can examine her and advise her on what to expect. Sometimes there are physical conditions that must be evaluated and treated that go unnoticed until puberty.

If she's ten or over and has other signs of puberty ( underarm and pubic hair, breast buds) it's probably a first period. But it is also time for her to see an ob/gyn for her first pelvic exam. Wouldn't want to miss a medical problem.
