  • I've had my shoes fixed a lot. New soles and heels, etc. I started that when I was in college and couldn't afford to buy a new pair. Had a pair of GI officer shoes I must have fixed 3 or four times.
  • yep we were poor but did the best we could.
  • You had it a little bit better than I.........The cardboard was my shoes.
  • Ive never been that poor, i generally wear taxpayer provided footwear though.
  • Yes cardboard to cover the rolled up newspaper balls I'd use to fill the holes.
  • naw ive never had to do that. ;D
  • Used to use duct tape.....Only because I refused to get rid of them.
  • No, I never have to go your experience. When my kids were young, we were quite fine financially because both my wife and I had gainful employment in the government.
  • I can remember when i was about 8 my mom sent me to the Lawsons (forerunner of convenience stores) to buy bread and something else and it came to 99 cents. I bought a piece of bubblegum with the penny and my mom actually made me take it back! that was a 2 mile hike each way and the store keeper at the time knew my mom and chewed me out too. Four trips for a piece of bubble gum..jeeeze..By the time i was a little older the soles lasted longer than the upper parts of the shoes so i often have had to sew my shoes back together, have used glues and yes, even good ol duct tape. I wore what we called "bargain barn specials" which were cheap assed tennis shoes which made my feet ache and running in gym you could hear them slap the floor like i was wearing wooden clogs.. Now if my shoes hurt i throw them out and find better shoes at any cost..It ain't worth ruining your feet, but back then I had lost several expensive shoes so my mom became tight as bark on a tree with me.. I still love her regardless though. She was trying to teach me the value of a penny. ;) I wouldn't trade those memories for anything though.
  • Dammit..lost my answer again.. Anyway.. When i was around 8 yrs old my mom sent me to the store 2 miles away to buy some bread and maybe milk with $1..it came to 99 cents and i bought a piece of gum with the penny, but when i got home my mom made me take it back and the store clerk chewed me out too when i got there..My mom knew everyone in a 100 mile radius I think LOL Later, I had lost several expensive pairs of shoes so mom only bought me what we called "bargain barn specials" which we dirt cheap tennis shoes that made me feet hurt and you could hear them like wooden clogs in gym class. The canvas always wore out before the soles so i sewed them back together quite a few times, patched them with tape and padded them with cut up underwear, etc.. I don't begrudge any of it to my mom..she was teaching me the value of a penny.. In todays world they would throw her in jail for "neglect" so kids today are to soft.. I wouldn't trade the memories of my mom for any amount of money or anything else for that matter. She passed on about 17 yrs ago.
