It is a major constituent of petrol (gasoline). As the most volatile liquid alkane, it is added to petrol in winter to aid starting the engine.
An isomer of it is used in IR spectroscopy, I think.
Pentane... is a hydrocarbon with a 5 carbon skeleton, it is regularly used as a solvent in labs and it evaporates quickly...
here is the material safety data sheet for it, I would not try to get my hands on it if I were you as it is highly flammable...
