Midtown Manhattan (see map)

I agree, Midtown. I stayed in Midtown near to Central Park and the location was fantastic. It is so easy to walk or travel around Manhattan anyway, so location isn't a major factor as such.

If money is no object, Midtown is fine. If you're planning on traveling on the cheap, it doesn't really matter that much where you stay. It's pretty easy to get around NYC by public transportation. Even if you stay in Brooklyn, it shouldn't be bad - just stay near a Subway line, preferably the L Train to make crosstown trips easy. I know people who stay in Jersey City when they visit NYC. The PATH train is pretty convenient to Midtown, but JC isn't that fun.

Go to goggle maps or goggle earth. It is very cool, you can explore the city all the way down to street level. They have driven a truck down every street in NYC and take 360 degree pictures about every 25 feet or so. You can walk around where you want to be and look at the names of hotels that look nice. Then, on another web page do a search of that hotel to find out the prices. Manhattan is more compact than I thought it would be when I visited for the first time a few months ago. Also, definately buy the double decker bus tour. It is a hop on hop off thing and well worth the money. I would suggest you buy the "Greyline" bus tour. They all take you to the same things but they also have seating inside the bus, which may be warmer in the winter. Thinking about it now, the other similar bus companies must put on their plexyglass tops in the winter. Additionally, I found the New York pass to be worth it.
