I don't know your circumstances, but if no reports or charges were ever filed and he is a more fit parent than you, he could get custody.

Unless he can prove you are an unfit mother, he won't get full custody. But you won't get full custody either if you can't prove that he is unfit (violent, in this case). Were police ever called? Do you have any witnesses who would testify to the beatings on your behalf?

Are you a mother or grandmother? You've posted several questions, most bashing dads. Also, do you live in Alabama or Missouri? Even if he never beat you, it can be blocked. In 1995, a father who simply defended himself by grabbing the arms of the mother to prevent her from scratching him in front of the child, was denied custody appealed to the Michigan Supreme Court. Two female friends of the mother testified to the fact, as it was reported in the national news. A prosecutor and the President of the Michigan Chapter of NOW led the appeal. Under the Violence Against Women Act, a man defending himself is still an abuser and cannot have custody.
