G'day Psychade, Thank you for your question. The two fundamental reasons for the incest taboo are an increased chance of birth deficiencies if the parents are closely related and that it often involves adults and children and/or young people having sex. Regards

good answer. incest is also a danger to society, in that marriage needs to be an extension of ties, not a narrowing of them. Look at the tension in the households of the Pharaohs who regularly committed incest.

God put a restriction on it in the Bible and that is good enough for me. It was necessary after the sin of Adam and Eve but when God wanted it over and done, he had the laws against it recorded in Leviticus.

DUDE...........That's your sister... isn't that enough. No but for real, I think that is about the moving forward of the human race. As others mentioned deformaties, abnormalities and so forth only make the gene pool smaller and thats why I find it to be fundamentally wrong. Even if you don't procreate you are denying the future of your genes (which might be a good thing if thst is what you like). I guess the heart wants what the heart wants, but making the human race better by enlarging the gene pool is only natural!

If you have ever visted a place in lancashire called Bacup you would know!!

there is not enough fresh DNA in the blood line. To produce good genes you can't just keep using the same ones over and over.

two words: The Hapburgs: they thought incest was best...not so much! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hapsburgs

Sex has progressed beyond it's original procreational function and is nowadays mainly practised for it's recreational purposes. It is something to be enjoyed by two consensual partners. As long as all precautions are taken to prevent unwanted pregnancies, the "problem" of not enlarging the gene pool is of no consequence. What two willing partners do behind closed doors is nobody else's business.

well, this question prolly set you up for some bashing from the religious nutcases, besides what issues might occur from offspring of said relationship. I personally dont really see what the big deal is, what people do in their bedrooms is their business, not mine.

The fact that it increased chances of recessive genes coming to the fore. It is not just a taboo in terms of human society, but we are in fact programmed not to sexually desire those we grow up with. This is borne out by the fact that incest most often happens between people who have been separated as children, and meet again when they are adult.

Your babies well have 4 legs and 1 eye

Legally you can marry a third cousin. The rules against incest are legal, and religious, for the most part. If there is a genetic predisposition for a birtdefect it can be detected with amnio-snthesis just the same as others. In close nred societies like Jewis ther's tay sachs and in Africa there sickle cell anemeia. The real problem is societal. There may be hundres of thousands of siblings married from war torn areas with no problems and we have yet to deal with artificially inseminated births. I don't condone it. But the 4 leg baby statements ar lost a long time ago

Fundamentally there is nothing wrong with incest. Society has made incest a taboo but if you go back in history even the history of the Bible you will find many cases of incest. The only case in the Bible where God was upset with it was when Amnon raped his sister then left her alone. If he had married her there would have been no problem. The key here is LOVE if you have incest with a close relative, be sure you love each other not that you have to marry but love is the key here. With modernday controceptives there should be no concern for pregnancy either; but even then it takes a couple of direct generations to have any problems. Do a little research and you will find incest is common and not really fundamentally wrong either.

You would have retarded babies. Also you are supposed to be biologically programmed to not like immediate family members. It's like an animal instinct thing that is supposed to keep this from happening.
