Just needs to be cooked a little longer and the beans will soften up. If you simmer it at low heat and stir it occasionally is should get even better because it gives the spices a chance to permiate everything. Otherwise it tends to give a bit of shall I say, "flatulence."

Of course! But this problem is easy to fix: Add some more water to the chili and set it on a low simmer. Stir the chili often enough to ensure you don't burn it on the bottom of the pan. As the chili cooks down, add more water as required until the beans are done. Not that I've had to do this in the past or anything...and I've deliberately slow-cooked chili all day this way, too.

My wife's last batch was sort of an experiment using dried black-eyed peas in chili and cooking them up crunchy. I thought it was GREAT. It added a nice texture to the dish. I hope yours turns out good too.
