  • Well, firstly a few thousand years is not very long in evolutionary terms. Secondly, we did NOT evolve FROM apes, we ARE apes and all apes share a common ancestor, probably a more primative primate. Evolution only occurs if there is a selection pressure, to put it simply, a desperate need to evolve (say putting short haired animals in the arctic). Currently, there is not a great deal of pressure on Homo sapiens, so evolution will be slow. However, if global warming continues it will favour humans who are tall with long arms and legs, as this gives the best ability to lose heat, (inuits tend to be short with small limbs, africans tall with long limbs). Interestingly medical science may slow down human evolution as they keep individuals who would normally die out alive. I am, of course, pro-medicine, but from a biological perspective we are increasing the number of genes that cause disease in the gene pool, and hence putting the species at risk, so we may have problems in that area- a kind of de-evolution (please let me repeat I am completely for medical treatment for all, I'm just pointing out the fact!). If things became very serious (nuclear war, meteor strike etc) then strong, intelligent people would obviously have an advantage. However, the biggest threat is from the simplist things of all- bacteria and viruses. HIV/aids is an absolute menace to society. But if the ebola virus ever got on an aeroplane, well... let's say 50% of humanity being wiped out is being optimistic. Given that disease is our biggest threat humans may appear very similar in several thousand years, however, at the celluar level they would have to have brilliant immune systems that would be quite different to what is seen today.
  • I don't believe we are evolved from apes, and I do not believe we are apes either. We will still look and will still be humans in 1,000-50,000 years from now. Adaptation is different from Evolution.
