  • I think more gay teens attempt suicide because of the unaccpetance of being gay. If they come out as being gay, I think they need to find someone they can trust & confide in to talk to, so they won't feel alone & so won't get depressed.
  • Gay males usually score more highly on tests of emotional instability and neuroticism - basically, they are more emotional than heterosexual men. That may be why the suicide rate is higher, especially when coupled with the reason alwayscurious gave, but as for stopping it? I don't think that is possible.
  • People (some adults and even teachers) make it harder on our gay youth.. not to mention they already feel "different" and kind of like they don't belong because of their feelings. Ignorance is bliss and people who don't understand or refuse to understand will constantly ridicule and talk down to these gay kids so much they feel like they don't really have anywhere to go or anyone to talk to. Even in a lot of cases their own parents don't agree with their lifestyle and cast them off as if they were just garbage. The best thing is education. People need to be taught more about homosexuality instead of just assuming its a choice a person makes. Knowledge is power.
  • They are not accepted into society like one of the previous answers said. I don't have a problem with gays at all but the world seems to for some reason. Especially religion, but if a person whole heartedly wants to go that kind of route then let them do what they desire to do.
  • Stop living a gay sinful life and start living a Godly life.
  • Unfortunately, even though more people are educating themselves with facts and have become more accepting, there are still far too many people who preach hatred and intolerance. When teens are subjected to such constant bigotry, they often become suicidal. It's pretty tough to get a bigot to change their minds, but making ourselves visible, and making help and support available is the key.
  • Because they are depressed about the fact that they are not accepted by the society. Some gay suicide can be prevented if the people close to them are more understanding and give them some good advice.
  • Sexual orientation and gender identity alone are not risk factors for suicide. However, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth face many social factors that put them at higher risk for self-destructive behaviors, including suicide.
  • Depression from not being excepted. The only way it would be prevented is if they could figure out how to change a gay straight. People are mean and they are always gonna do this. It may die down after a few yrs but the hate will always be there.
  • teen suicide attempts should be prevented not just gay teen suicide and every person has there own problem it could be mental illness depression or just curiosity and many other reasons you need to treat them individually not as a group and there isnt one thing tat can prevent it there are many things and some of those things are hard to prevent like bullying. you can try to stop it but the truth of the matter is you cant. there are always going to be bullies. but you can try to stop it as best you can but that involves so many other people and they might not be willing to. then if they have a mental illness you can treat them but only if it is reconized but its very hard to determine if they want to attempt suicide because most people that are serious of doing it keep it to themself and act different around other people and most of the time people are very shocked when they hear that it has occured b/c thats how well they can hide themselfs and act just like other people
  • I think gays attempt suicide due to lack of understanding by their family and friends. The way to stop it is to understand them and show some patience and compassion if you do not.
  • Home schooling. Schools are far too tolerant of teasing and fighting on all levels. It's actually a disservice to all children for them to permit such behavior. Children do not learn what is and is not acceptable behavior for the workplace. Seriously, try ripping on someone at work the way you used to in high school and see how fast your ass is fired.
  • Why did I try suicide?..because I knew that I would/could never be what society expected me to be..... I think better education in schools and certainly in the homes would help with this tragic problem.
  • why did I try to commit suicide..because I realized that I never would/could live the life that society would deem as normal... I think that more education in the schools and at home would help.
  • Being gay is almost certainly more difficult than being straight, regardless of social stigmas. Gay people have a very small dating pool and a have to suffer rejection when someone they someone they come onto turns out not to be gay. With regard to the stigma...I'm sure it is a factor but being gay is far more accepted now than at any other time in the history of America and arguably the world.
  • Could be... their family rejecting them people in school/college/whatever rejecting them friends rejecting them Bullying abuse not fitting in with what they are often taught is "normal" It would probably help if people were more educated. You know, like in sex ed and by their parents. And it would doubtless help if everyone was surrounded by a more positive attitude in regards to all sexual orientations.
  • One of the biggest issues for ALL teens, regardless of sexual orientation, is fitting in..feeling they belong and are accepted and liked for who they are. Teens who are gay often experience significant negative reactions to "who" they are...their very essence is called into question and often ridiculed or called deviant. Teenagers also live in a world where everything in their life is a major ordeal. Emotions are felt more strongly during this time because teens have not yet developed the higher brain functioning needed to see things from a rational perspective. Put those two things together and you have a recipie for disaster for a young person who sees no way out from a situation where they are battling who they are.
