What was a typical range of sizes for medieval European castles or keeps that were actually meant to function as fortresses? Like maybe 20-30 yards or meters on a side for a smaller one?

They were big enough to (hopefully) keep the bad guys out and the good guys in.

One ot the best preserved castles that is still intact is the Tower of London. Buildinig started in 1067 by William I (or William the Conqueror or William the Bastard (but never to his face!))and added and altered by sucessive monarchs. It was used as a royal palace, mint, zoo, prison and even as recently as WW2 a concentration camp. I'm not sure of it's origional dimensions as it stated out as one building (The White Tower)and grew.
