Do you think that volunteer over-seas experiences (i.e. visit Africa and build a school with other volunteers) are trustworthy? The costs seem disproportionate and I worry that somebody makes profit somewhere.

what is their cost? it costs over $1,000 to fly to Africa, plus they have to pay their staff that organizes all of the trips, you need a place to stay, food, supplies, shots, visa, passport, etc. i doubt people are making money off of it, but i guess it depends on what group you are talking about.

There is usually some profit component somewhere because you must rely on services from other entities, and not all will be not-for-profit. However, if, ultimately the kids get the help they desperately need, then you've done a good thing. Certainly the costs are disproportionate compared to volunteering at the local homeless shelter; however, having been in Africa a few times - the needs are an order of magnitude greater than anything you have seen if you live in the West. If you can manage it, I would recommend you do it at least once in your life. The poverty is stunning but the reward from helping just a bit is gratifying, and let's face it, something that most westerners cannot or will not do. So, it's nice to do something different that actually helps people.
