Depends on who says it. To "the loyal opposition" it is an epithet. To the rest of us, it denotes caring about others and wanting to be of help to them. :)

The Right Wing has made "liberal" a bad term and an offense, a pawn to blame for all the evil these nuts cause but then again, in the Right's dictionary, everything is bad and offensive, except that which they do themselves, of course

As a non American I sometimes feel it is used by Americans to categorize what the rest of the world would call socialists, left wing and big government oriented, which is either a good or a bad thing depending on your point of view, while in Europe Liberals can be either of the left or the right, the definition seems to be quite different.

The intentual progressiveness of removing any moral value system which this country's heritage was founded upon. It also suggests that elitism is necessary to largely govern over the masses whom they view as nothing more than animals who cannot fend for themselves. It is based purely in self-interested ideology as opposed to letting people govern their own lives (on a micro level) through learning, execution, and teaching that which succeeds out of the school of hard knocks.
